Graduate VISA

UK Graduate Visa

The Graduate visa, or Graduate Immigration Route, allows international students who have completed an eligible degree during their UK studies to stay for an additional 2 years (3 for PhD graduates). The Graduate Immigration Route replaces the discontinued Post-Study Work Visa (PSW) and is a part of the UK government’s renewed efforts to attract and retain global talent.

This Visa is designed to help graduates transition into the UK job market by enabling them to work, search for employment, or start their own business without needing a job offer or sponsorship. FAQ: UK Graduate Visa

You should apply for the UK Graduate Visa before your current Student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa expires.

Here are the key points to remember:

  • You can submit your application as soon as your university has notified the Home Office that you have successfully completed your course.
  • There is no need to wait until you have received your degree certificate or attended your graduation ceremony.
  • The timing is crucial – ensure you apply while your current student visa is still valid.

The validity period of your UK Graduate Visa depends on the level of degree you have completed:

  • For Bachelor’s and Master’s degree graduates: The visa is valid for 2 years from the date of approval.
  • For PhD graduates: The visa is valid for 3 years from the date of approval.

Typically, you can expect a decision on your UK Graduate Visa application within 8 weeks of submitting your application and all required supporting documents.

Key Points:

  • The 8-week timeframe is an estimate and may vary depending on individual circumstances.
  • Ensure all your documents are complete and accurate to avoid delays in processing.
  • You can remain in the UK while waiting for a decision, even if your student visa expires during this period.

Important Notes:

  • You will not be required to provide financial evidence with your Graduate visa application.

The application fee for the UK Graduate Visa in 2024 is £822. In addition to this, you must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which is £1,035 per year.

  • For a 2-year Graduate Visa (Bachelor’s/Master’s), the total cost is £2,892 (£822 application fee + £2,070 IHS).

No, the Graduate visa itself does not directly lead to settlement (also known as Indefinite Leave to Remain or ILR) in the UK. However, it provides a valuable opportunity to gain work experience and potentially transition to another visa category that does offer a path to settlement.

While you cannot extend your Graduate Visa, you have a few options when it expires:

  • Switch to a Skilled Worker visa: If you secure a job offer from a UK employer licensed to sponsor workers, you may be eligible to switch to a Skilled Worker visa. This visa category can lead to settlement after five years.
  • Explore other routes: Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for other visa categories that can lead to settlement, such as the Innovator visa, Start-up visa, or Global Talent visa.
